The group, based in the Department of Multimedia, Media, and Communication at the Institute of Arts of Unicamp, aims to investigate the sonic (and musical) aspects of cinema and audiovisual media from theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives. It seeks to understand how sound, in its sonic-visual form and in its inseparability from visuality, contributes to the construction of narratives, aesthetics, and sensory experiences, as well as to the establishment of listening regimes and modes of reception. The historical approach aims to map transformations, continuities, and contingencies in sonic-visual relations across different cultural, industrial, technological, and productive contexts, from early cinema to contemporary audiovisual works, also exploring their intersections with sound media. The theoretical perspective seeks to expand the field conventionally known as film sound (and film music) studies, incorporating insights from sound studies, philosophy, and related disciplines. In doing so, it aims to articulate interpretations that consider both the specificity and experience of the filmic/sonic-visual, as well as its sociocultural, economic, and political dimensions. The practical dimension encompasses experimentation in sound recording, editing, design, and mixing. The group intends to explore research and creative methodologies in which practice itself constitutes a form of knowledge production. In this way, the group seeks to consolidate an investigative space capable of combining critical reflection and creative experimentation, contributing to the development of film sound studies, both in advancing academic research and in renewing contemporary sonic-visual practices.
